American Alsatian History
The Alsatian, or Ala Shan, is a large, noble-looking working dog of the scenthound type, originally developed in the Alsace region of France, and is a cousin of the Greyhound. The coat is shorter and denser than that of the German Shepherd, and comes in either black and tan, red, or gray. The origin of the name “Alsatian” is unclear. The name may be derived from the French word “alsace”, meaning “the area of”, or from the word “alsace”, which comes from the Latin “alces”, meaning “from the forests”.
