Armenian Gampr History

The Armenian Gampr is a type of sheepdog from the Caucasus. The Armenian Gampr is a type of sheepdog from the Caucasus. The Georgian word “gampir” means “hunter”, and this refers to the dogs’ role herding the flocks of sheep owned by local shepherds. The harsh climate of the mountainous regions of the Caucasus meant that the dogs needed to be hardy and rugged, and this led to the development of the thick double coat that distinguishes the Armenian Gampr from other Caucasian mountain dogs. The dogs are descended from the Caucasian Shepherd, a primitive wolf-like animal that dates back to the Neolithic era. The Armenians adopted the dog into their culture in ancient times, and they developed it into a more domesticated canine. The Armenian Gampr is still used as a working dog by shepherds in remote parts of Georgia.
