Barak (Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound) History
The Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound (Barak) is a medium to large-sized scenthound that originated on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was developed from a combination of various hound types, including the Hungarian Waterdog, the Dalmatian and the Middle Eastern Greyhound. The Balkan Hunting Dog is believed to have originated in the Near East, probably in what is now Syria, and to have been crossed with native dogs of the region, such as the Azawakh. The FCI recognises three varieties of the Balkan Hunting Dog: the Azawakh of North Africa, the Maremma of Italy and the Barak of the Balkans. The Barak was originally used as a large-game hunter. It is still used by hunters in Bosnia to hunt boar and deer, and it is also a popular show and obedience competitor. The FCI first recognised the Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound as a distinct variety in 2009.
