Basselier History
The Basselier, also known as the Belgian Tervuren, is a herding and draft type Belgian sheepdog. The Basselier is a medium-sized, well-proportioned, agile, active, and sturdy working dog. The Basselier is a healthy, hardy, and intelligent working dog. The Basselier is the national and official breed of Belgium. The ancestors of the modern day Belgian Tervuren were first developed in the 12th century by crossing the smaller Flemish shepherd with the bigger Dutch Shepherd. These dogs were then used as a livestock guardian and as farm and farmyard dogs. The first standard for the modern day Belgian Tervuren was written in 1935 by Professor Lefebvre. In 1959 the Club Cynologique International (CCI) recognized the Basseleur as a distinct and separate breed.
