Basset Bleu de Gascogne History
The Basset Bleu de Gascogne, also known as the Basset Hound, is a breed of gundog that descends from the scenthounds of the Renaissance. The origins of the Basset Bleu de Gascogne can be traced back to the 15th century. The popularity of the “French Water Dog”, a scenthound that was crossed with the local water spaniel, led to the development of the Bassets, which were then developed further by the kennels of Louis XIV, the Sun King. The modern version of the Basset Bleu de Gascogne was officially recognized in 1907.
