Bearded Collie History
The Bearded Collie is a medium-size herding and livestock guardian dog that originated in Australia. The Bearded Collie is a medium sized, muscular, athletic working dog, with a long, dense coat and beard, and a long, thick, tapering tail. The Beardie has a confident, alert temperament and is highly intelligent and willing to work. The male is 63-70 cm tall, and weighs 46-55 kg. The female is 59-65 cm tall, and weighs 38-46 kg. It has been said that the females that exhibit less of the ‘masculine’ traits of the males, and therefore obtain a more ‘feminine’ look, are more sought after. The Hair Sheep is a primitive sheep with a primitive coat. Like its cousins the Merino and Lincoln, the Hair Sheep is descended from the strain of the Middle Eastern wild goat, the Bezoar. The Hair sheep has a longer, more wooly coat of fur than its cousin the Lincoln, and is adapted to living in harsher climates where the temperature can drop to -30°C. The Coat of the Hair Sheep is variable. Some can be 10-12 inches long and of a soft, fine texture, while others are long and coarse. The Longer Soft Coats are, in fact, the hair of goats. The hairy tails of the Hair Sheep are decorated with 12-18 inches of long, soft hair. The Bearded Collie
