Belgian Tervuren History
The Belgian Tervuren is a working and herding dog, and a member of the Herding Group. The Belgian Tervuren is a medium-sized, square, well-balanced, ruggedly built, and agile terrier, with a harsh, wiry, weather-resistant double coat. The roots of the Tervuren descend from two types of dogs, the Briard (French: ) and the Berger Picard (French: ). The origin of its name comes from two places, one in Belgium and the other in Flanders, Belgium. The Belgian Tervuren was originally used to hunt foxes using packs of hounds. The popularity of fox-hunting began to dwindle in the 1800s, and the Belgian farmers began to use the dogs to herd sheep, cattle, and chickens. The breed was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1966.
