Berger Blanc Suisse History
The Berger Blanc Suisse, or White Swiss Shepherd, is a breed of herding dog that originated in Europe. The Berger Blanc Suisse was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 2010, making it the first new working dog breed to be recognized by the AKC in 100 years. The Berger Blanc Suisse is a medium-sized, white, smooth-coated shepherd, similar in appearance to the German Shepherd, yet distinguished by two long, floppy ears. The coat of the Berger Blanc Suisse is thick, dense, and resilient. The origins of this relatively new breed of sheepdog are the subject of much debate, with some claiming that the dogs were developed in Switzerland in the 1950’s, while others contend that the off-type shepherds of Switzerland were the result of crosses between Belgian Sheepdogs and German Shepherd Dogs.
