Bernese Cattle Dog History

The Bernese Mountain Dog, sometimes known as a Berner, is a breed of domestic dog of the Working Group, developed in the Jura region of Switzerland. The Swiss Kennel Club recognized the Standard variety of the Bernese Mountain Dog in 1886, and today the breed is one of the most popular in the world. The Swiss called their version of the common cattle drover a dog “Bernese” after the region, whereas the name “Bernese” is generally accepted outside Switzerland.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a medium-sized, large breed that typically stands between 24 and 28 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between 70 and 130 pounds. They have a large, heavy body and a thick, long, straight, dense, and wavy multi-colored coat. They have a domed head with a relatively short muzzle and a straight or slightly curved topline. They have large, level, triangular ears that hang forward and flat against their head. The Bernese mountain dog has a muscular, sloping back and wide, well-muscled forelegs. They have short, strong, round, and hairy paws and a heavy tail. The Bernese mountain dogs are good-natured, loving animals, who are protective, devoted, and alert. They are great family pets.

Bernese Cattle Dog Temperament and Behaviour

The Bernese Cattle Dog is a gentle and sensitive dog that makes a great companion. They are patient and good-natured, but can be stubborn and hard-headed. They are natural herders, and excel at jobs like sled-pulling and search and rescue. They are sociable and get along well with children, but should be supervised around small children, as their natural herding instincts may kick in.

Bernese Cattle Dogs are powerful and muscular. They are a protective and loyal breed of dog, making them an excellent choice for families with small children. They do well in homes with fenced yards or people who like to take their dogs for walks. While Bernese Cattle Dogs are not overly energetic, they do require regular exercise. They are best suited to owners who are willing and eager to spend time with their dog. They can easily become bored or lonely if left alone for long periods of time.
