Black Forest Hound History
The Black Forest Hound is a medium-sized, long-haired scenthound developed in the Black Forest region of Germany. The hound was originally used for fox and wolf hunting, but in recent years its popularity has been increasing. The ancestors of today’s Black Forest Hounds can be traced to the Bohemian Wolfdog, a primitive type of canine discovered in the Austro-Hungarian Empire around 1760. The first known description of the current type was by French naturalist Georges Cuvier in 1824, who described it as a “vulpine hound”. The breed was well established by the end of the 19th century, but saw a decline in the population during World War II. The population has since rebounded, with approximately 3,000 animals registered in Germany.
