Black Mouth Cur History
The Black Mouth Cur is a breed of medium-sized American spitz-type herding and guard dog. It was originated in the United States and its name means “black mouth.” It should not be confused with the black-mouthed cur, another American canine. The breed is one of four known varieties of the Carolina Dog. The first mention of the Black Mouth Cur occurred in 1853, after 18 year old Mary Carter of South Carolina acquired one that had been shipped to her by her father. Mr. Carter had purchased the dog in the Mississippi Territory. It was shipped to his daughter to be a companion to her two other dogs. The dog turned out to have a black tongue, which gave the dog its nickname.
