The dingo, native to Australia, is the largest of the native canines of the Australasian region. It resembles a medium-sized, short-haired, golden-colored German Shepherd. The dingo was introduced to the Torres Strait Islands from New Guinea around 4000 years ago. It is found throughout mainland Australia, although its numbers have significantly declined, especially on the east coast. The dingo was exterminated from Tasmania by 1930, and it is believed that it is extinct on King Island in the Bass Strait.
