The distinctive black-and-white coat of the Border Jack was historically used to show ownership; the possession of a black and white border collie was proof of ownership of a croft and entitled the crofter to a free supply of oats. The FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) recognizes three distinct varieties of the breed: the Shetland, the Aberdeen, and the Caithness. The FCI also recognizes the distinct “stock types” of the Welsh Corgi and the Bearded Collie.
