Boston Cattle Dog History
The Boston Cattle Dog is one of America’s oldest working cattle dogs and is considered to be the progenitor of all modern herding dogs. The Boston’s family origins date back to the Colonial era, when early settlers brought their dogs with them from England. The Boston was a popular farm dog in the colonies and was widely used to herd livestock. The popularity of the Boston waned after the Civil War, but interest in this sturdy, intelligent, and affectionate working animal was renewed in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Boston Cattle Dog Temperament and Behaviour
The Boston Cattle Dogs are highly intelligent, courageous, and dominant. They are independent and strong-willed, but also crave human companionship. They are extremely loyal to their owners, but can be aggressive with other dogs and animals, especially those that are smaller than they are. They have a tendency to be suspicious of strangers, so early socialization is important.
Boston Cattle Dog Activity Requirements
The Boston Cattle Dog is a rugged, intelligent, and active working dog. While originally bred for herding cattle, they are equally happy in homes as family pets. Like most working breeds, the Boston Cattle Dog is an active, high energy dog. They need large amounts of exercise and mental stimulation. If your schedule will allow it, a daily walk or jog, plus some time playing in the yard, will be sufficient to meet your dog’s exercise needs. If you are looking for a high-energy companion, the BCD may be the right dog for you. In addition to being physically active, they are very smart and excel at learning new tricks.
