Bouvier des Ardennes History

The Bouvier des Ardennes is a type of farm dog from the region of Wallonia in Belgium. The Bouvier des Ardennes is descended from the Molosser-type Swiss mountain and herding breeds, such as the Great Pyrenees, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Entlebucher Mountain Dog. The Belgian settlers brought their dogs with them to North America and this influenced the development of the American Pit Bull Terrier. The distinctive features of the modern Doberman Pinscher, Rottweiler, and German Shepherd were the result of breeding of smaller, more agile dogs. The Belgian settlers also imported the cattle herding and guarding hounds, such as the Chinese Shar-pei, to North America.
