Brussels Griffon History
The Brussels Griffon is a small toy-sized, smooth-coated, short-legged, long-eared, elegant, rather insular, and very intelligent Belgian canine. The tail is docked, and in at least one registry, the tail is cropped as well. The coat can be any color, but most commonly black, tan, or liver. The eyes can be blue, brown, amber, or hazel. The Brussels Griffon was originally developed by crossing the Petit Brabancon and the Smooth Fox Terrier. The ancestors of the modern Brussels Griffon were believed to be the Barbet du Hainaut and the Waterdogs from Belgium. The Brussels Griffon has a long history as a companion and working dog, being depicted in a number of works of art dating from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The origin of the name “Brussels” for the breed is unclear, although it was probably named for the city of Brussels in Belgium.
