Bullwhip History
The Bullwhip is a fairly new type of whip, but its history extends back centuries. The tradition of the Bullwhip can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when it was used as a tool by shepherds. The origin of the word “Bull Whip” is unclear, but it probably derives from the Latin “bulla”, meaning “knot”. The modern version of the Bullwhip consists of a braided leather thong, or lash, with a handle at each end. The thong is wrapped around a knot at one end and then around the fingers at the other. The thong is whipped back and forth using the wrist as a fulcrum. The movement of the person holding the thong causes the thong to coil and uncoil. The thong can also be wrapped and coiled around a baton or a cane. In modern times, Bullwhips have been used for stage performances, circus acts and rodeos. Today, they are mainly used as props in films and on television.
