Cardigan Corswiss History

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Welsh Springer Spaniel were originally the same breed of dog. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was selectively bred from the larger, heavier working-type spaniel during the late 1800s. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is an intelligent, hardy, and independent-minded herding and farm helper. The distinctive and recognisable appearance of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is due to its long, thick coat and trademark “comb”. This ancient breed of small herding and farm dogs is believed to have originated in the British Isles, where its ancestors were used as sheepdogs, drovers, herders, and watchdogs in past centuries. The Cardigan name comes from the region of Wales, where the corgi was used to keep flocks of geese. The “Cymric” or “Welsh” prefix to the name refers to the historic Celtic nation of ancient Britain, now known as Wales. The English applied the term “Cardigan” to the dogs of this region. The “Welsh” suffix is a reference to the fact that the corgi is native to Wales. The Cardigan is the “native” or “original” form of the modern Pembroke, and is distinguished from the Pembroke by its smaller frame and wooly coat. The Pembroke is the larger, heavier, and longer-haired version of the modern Welsh Corgi. The “Cardigan” designation is now used by almost all fanciers of the Pembroke, although the Kennel Club still recognises the “Corgi” as a separate variety.

Cardigan Corswiss Temperament and Behaviour

The Cardigan Corgi is a happy, playful, and energetic dog that loves to play games. They are extremely loyal to their owners and typically form very strong bonds with them. They love being around children, but because of their tendency to nip at heels, they should be supervised around very young children.

Cardigan Corswiss Activity Requirements

Cardigan Welsh Corgies are a strong, muscular, and energetic little dog. Originally bred for herding cattle, they are known for their intelligence and willingness to work. While Cardigan Welsh Corgies generally do not require much exercise and are quite content lounging around the house, they do need to have some type of daily, structured activity. A daily walk or jog, short training session, or a game of fetch are all great ways to let your Corgi burn off some excess energy. While they can live in an apartment, they do need to be able to get outside on a regular basis. If you live in a small space or don’t have time for long walks, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi may not be right for you.
