Carpathian Shepherd History
The Carpathian Shepherd is a working sheepdog that originated in America. The first recorded mention of the breed was in 1914, when it was shown at the Ohio State Fair. The first and only standard for the breed was created in 1922, and by 1931 there were 57 registered puppies. The population began to decline in the 1950s, and the breed came close to extinction. The Kennel Club recognized the Carpathian Shepherd in 1972, but the studbook closed in 1982. The Kennel Club began registering the Carpathian Shepherd as a native landrace in 1988. The population remains at very low levels, and the Kennel Club no longer registers the strain.
