Catahoula Leopard Dog History

The Catahoula Leopard Dog, often abbreviated to (CaLD), is an American-bred and mixed-breed hybrid. The mixture of original and new bloodlines has resulted in a much improved temperament in the standard-Labrador and Giant-Chow mix. The leopard-spotted coat is highlighted by blue-black spots on a background of liver-colored or gray. The origin of the Catahoula Leopard Dog is controversial. The mixed-breed was not recognized by American breeders until 1997. However, the 1973 edition of the American Kennel Club (AKC) Complete Book of Dogs includes a “Louisiana Catahoula” among the “Miscellaneous or Exotic Purebreds”.

Catahoula Leopard Dog Temperament and Behaviour

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is an alert and attentive breed that is loyal to its family and protective of its territory. They are not suitable for inexperienced dog owners, however, as they are very independent and can be difficult to train.

Catahoula Leopard Dog Activity Requirements

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are smart, spirited, and energetic. They love to play and have a good time. They require regular exercise, both physical and mental, in order to be happy. Most Catahoula Leopard Dogs will do well in homes with yards. The more space they have, the happier they will be. A daily walk or jog is a great way to give your Catahoula some much-needed exercise and mental stimulation. They are also natural hunters, and will enjoy playing ball or chasing a frisbee. Living with a Catahoula Leopard Dog requires dedication and commitment. This is not a dog that can be left at home while you’re at work. They are best suited to families who are willing to give them the time, attention, and exercise they need.
