The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a popular breed of gundog that is native to the United States. The Chesapeake is also known as the Chessie, after its location of origin on the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake is a medium-to-large sized American water retriever that is primarily black in color, but is also commonly liver and white. The Chessie was originally developed as a working retriever and waterfowl hunter, and is descended from two types of retrieving dogs that were native to central Maryland: the Newfoundland and the black Labrador. The Chessie was standardized as a distinct breed in 1933, and is a member of the Sporting Group.
