Chi Apso History
The Chi is a toy-sized, family-friendly, hypoallergenic, low-shedding, highly intelligent, and emotionally stable canine. As one of only eight purebreeds in the Bichon family, the “p” in “Chi” does not stand for “Poodle”, but rather “Persian” – an inspired decade-by-decade copycat. The first known ancestor of the modern day Chi was imported to Havana, Cuba in the 1500s from Persia. It arrived within the “Barbuda” or “Bordo” – a working class area. The Bordo was a melting pot for different cultures, religions, and races. The exchange of trade goods, ideas, and people, brought new influences to the neighborhood. The “chi” in the Bordo’s name suggested it was a dog with an exotic origin. The word “Apso” is the Greek term for “monkey”. In that respect, the Chi-Apso is a “monkey-faced” or “ape-faced” Bichon. The 1920’s: Cubans became enamored of Paris Hilton and brought back the “Chi”. The 1930’s: Cuban exiles fled to Miami and brought their beloved “Chi” with them. The 1940’s: The “Chi” is recognized by the AKC. The 1950’s: The “Apso” is recognized by the AKC. The 1960’s: The “Apso” is recognized by the AKC. The
