Cocker Westie History
The Cocker Spaniel and the West Highland White Terrier were crossbred to create the modern-day version of the Cocker Westie, or Cockapoo. The Westie is a medium-sized, terrier-type, working dog that originated in Scotland. The origin of the name “West Highland White Terrier” is somewhat unclear. The name is reputed to have arisen from the coat color of the “White Heather” variety of the West Highland White, a Scottish cattle herding dog that predates the terrier. The “white” in “white heather” refers to the white markings on the ears, legs, tail, and muzzle. The popularity of the “Westies” increased throughout the 1800s and 1900s, and they began to be exported to other countries, including the United States.
