Confetti Australian Shepherd History

The Australian Sheepdog, or Aussie, is a medium-to-large-sized working herding and farm dog that originated in Australia. The Aussie has been a working animal since the days of early European settlement in Australia. The Aussies have many talents, including guarding, cattle work, obedience, agility, and, of course, herding. The Aussies’ ancestors date back to the Middle Ages, when the ancestral spitz-type dogs would have been used for herding and protection. The Aussies arrived in Australia with the First Fleet, and over the next two centuries they developed into several different breeds. These different strains were crossed with each other, and the resulting offspring were then selectively bred for desired traits. The various strains were brought together and standardized in 1970, and the modern Aussie was officially recognized in 1991. The Australian Shepherd Club of America currently recognizes 13 distinct Australian Shepherd bloodlines.
