The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is a mixed-breed or hybrid animal. The Czech Republic and Slovakia are the only countries in which the wolf-dog is currently permitted to be kept as a pet. The wolf-dog can trace its roots back to 1972, when a Czech breeder, Karel V. Havlíček, crossed a German Shepherd with a Carpathian wolf. The pups that resulted from this union were large, strong, and intelligent, which made them desirable as guard dogs and police dogs. The wolfdogs that Havlíček bred were never used for the purpose of hunting or culling wolves, and they did not come into existence as a way to preserve the last remaining population of wild wolves. The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog was created purely as a domesticated animal.
