Doberman Greyhound History
The Dobermann is a dog that was originally developed in Germany. The Doberman Pinscher is thought to have descended from the Molossus, a sheep-herding dog that lived around the Western Balkans and Asia Minor 1500 years ago. The Molossus was later crossed with the English Bulldog, a mastiff-type dog that was brought to Germany from Britain. The resulting hybrid was known as the Bullen-Deutsche, and is the parent of the later Doberman. The Dobermann is known for its courage, intelligence and strength. The temperament of the breed is calm, confident and protective. The Doberman was originally developed as a guard and watchdog, and today it is a popular police dog and military service dog. The origin of the name “Dobermann” is unclear; some believe that it derives from “Dober”, meaning “German”, while others believe it originates from “Dob”, meaning “thunder”.
