Englian Mastiff History
The English Mastiff, also known as the English Bull Dog, is a breed of very large, ancient and broad mastiff-type working dogs developed in England. The origins of this famous and powerful working and war dog date back to Ancient Rome, where its ancestors were probably used for bear and lion baiting. In the 1700s, the Old English Bulldog was a popular fighting bull terrier, but its popularity waned. In the 1800s, the bulldog was crossed with the bullmastiff and created the modern-day English Mastiff. The register of Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1873, and the first standard was set in 1875. Meaty, strong, large, and strongly built, the English Mastiff is a dog of imposing appearance and formidable stature. The head is massive, square in shape, and of proportionate length and width. It possesses great strength and power, yet is free from coarseness. The muzzle is broad and square, with slight indentations at the sides. The nose is black. The eyes are almond-shaped, dark in color, and set on moderately high. The ears are medium in size and pendant, placed low and close to the head. The coat is of short and dense texture. The preferred colors are brindle, fawn, mahogany, and white.
