English Boston-Bulldog History
The English Bulldog and its American cousin the Boston Terrier have a shared history of over 150 years. They were originally developed in England as bull-baiting dogs and were later exported to America. The Bull-and-Terrier, as it was called in America, was bred from the older bulldog-type dogs, like the dogo argentino, as well as terrier-type dogs, like the Black and Tan Coonhound, Bloodhound, Bull Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. These dogs were then crossed to produce a dog that was more tolerant of heat, noise, and crowds than a bulldog. The “Bull-and-Terrier”, as it was known in America, was bred from the older bulldog-type dogs, like the dogo argentino, as well as terrier-type dogs, like the Black and Tan Coonhound, Bloodhound, Bull Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. These dogs were then crossed to produce a dog that was more tolerant of heat, noise, and crowds than a bulldog. The first mention of a bull-and-terrier as a show dog appeared in a newspaper in 1858. The Kennel Club of England first registered the “English Bull-and-Terriers” in 1863. The “American Bulldog” was first introduced to America in 1865. In 1885, the American Kennel Club officially recognized these two different breeds.

English Boston-Bulldog Temperament and Behaviour
The English Bulldog is a sweet, gentle, and mellow breed of dog. They are highly adaptable and make great companion dogs. English Bulldogs are also very protective of their families and can become very territorial, which can make socialization at an early age important.
English Boston-Bulldog Activity Requirements
English Bulldogs are a sturdy, compact, and muscular breed of dog. They have a short coat and square head, making them instantly recognizable. While they are not known for being especially active, they do enjoy a good walk or a game of fetch. They would rather be with their family than alone in their backyard. While they do like to be with their people, they don’t always get along well with other dogs. If you choose to get an English Bulldog, be sure you are prepared to meet their socialization and training needs.
