English Speagle History

The English Speagle is a medium-sized, muscular gundog, developed in England during the mid-19th century. The word “speagle” is an anglicized form of the German word “Spregel,” which means “sprout”. A sprig is a young tree or shrub, and in old English, the word “sprout” referred to a bushy tailed bird. The Old English word for “sprout” was “sprag”, which later evolved into the English word “Spragg”. The “Dog of the Century” is the English and Irish Setter, which beat out the Newfoundlander, the Weimaraner, the St. Bernard, the Bulldog, and the other three setters.

English Speagle Temperament and Behaviour

The English Speagle is an energetic, playful and active breed of spaniel. They are friendly and sociable, but can sometimes be shy with new people, especially children. They need a lot of exercise, so they are not ideal for apartment living. English Speagles are very intelligent and can easily be trained.

English Speagle Activity Requirements

The English Springer Spaniel is a popular and versatile hunting dog. They are athletic, warm-hearted, and good with children. They are a popular pet due to their friendly demeanor. While they were originally bred for hunting, today’s English Springer Spaniels are also beloved as companion dogs and compete in many canine sports. While they don’t require much vigorous exercise, an English Springer Spaniel does need a moderate amount. They will be happy with a 30- to 60-minute daily walk. They should also be provided with an opportunity to play and run around. If you plan on getting an English Springer Spaniel, be sure you are ready to meet their exercise and grooming needs. They need moderate amounts of both physical and mental activity and will benefit from being with an active owner.
