French Bullweiler History

The French Bull Terrier is a medium to large sized, short-coated, square-proportioned bull terrier. While not officially recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), it is recognised by the United Kennel Club (UKC). The “bull” label stems from its ancestor, the Old English Bulldog, which was a large, powerful, fearless, and tenacious fighting dog. The origins of this “bull” are unclear. Some believe the “Bull” moniker refers to a dog named “Bulldog”, which, according to the 1881 edition of The Illustrated London News, was owned by Lord Foley. Some believe the name came from the bull baiting pits in South London. The “Terrier” term ultimately comes from its ancestor, the English Black and Tan terrier, which was a noted ratter. The “French” part has its origins in the now-extinct French White English Terrier.
