Gascon Saintongeois History
The Gascony Saintongeois, also known as “Gascony Spaniel”, is a family pet from the South-West France. It is an ancient French breed of gundog or “gun spaniel”. The male stands between 25–27 inches at the withers, and weighs between 55–70 pounds. Females are smaller, standing between 23–25 inches at the withers, and weighing between 45–60 pounds. The coat is silky, short, and close lying. The tail is docked and ears cropped. The head is wedge-shaped with a narrow muzzle, a full nasal bridge, and hazel eyes. The origins of the breed are unknown. It is most likely a descendant of the Anglo-French Water Spaniel, which was brought to France from England in the 18th century. The original purpose of the French Saints was to hunt in the swamps and marshes of the South of France for duck, geese, and partridge. The dogs are very good at tracking, and are also very affectionate and loyal.
