German Anatolian Shepherd History
The German Anatolian Shepherd is a medium to large-size, working sheepdog from Germany, used for herding livestock and guarding property. They are also known as the Turkish Kangal, the Kangal der Türkei, the Tosk, the Angora, the Alp, the Akbash, the Angorar, the Aksaray, and the Alpay. The dogs are called “Turkish” because they were imported into Germany from Turkey, although their country of origin is actually the mountainous regions of central Asia.

The German Anatolian Shepherd is a medium-sized, muscular, ancient breed that originated in Turkey. They stand between 24 and 26 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh around 60 to 80 pounds. They have a thick, double coated, short, and curly fleece. Their heads are broad and round with a medium sized nose. Their ears are floppy and their legs are thick, sturdy, and straight. They usually come in fawn, white, gray, or black.
