Golden Sheltie History
The Golden Sheltie is a herding and pet breed of medium sized golden-colored dogs. It was developed in the 1900s through the combination of the American Shetland Sheepdog and Collie. The origin of the name “Sheltie” refers to the Shetland Islands, which are off the coast of Scotland, where the American Shetland Sheepdog originated. The Shetland sheepdogs were crossed with various other working dogs, including Scottish Deerhounds, English Foxhounds and Scottish Terriers. The mix created a very strong herding dog, and the dogs were used for the farming and ranching activities on the Western United States. The popularity of these dogs led to the creation of the American Kennel Club in 1884, which established the Sheltie as a distinct and separate breed.

The Golden Shetland Sheepdog is a medium-sized herding dog with a thick, wiry coat. They may look cute, but they are actually an active, high-energy breed of dog. Most Golden Shelties will need at least an hour of exercise a day. This usually consists of a few short walks throughout the day or one long, vigorous outing. They also need plenty of play time. They love to chase a ball or Frisbee, as well as roughhousing with their human companion. If you are looking for a patient, affectionate, and loyal companion, the Golden Shetland Sheepdog may be your perfect match.
