The Gran Mastin de Borinquen (commonly misspelled as “Borinquen”) is a medium-large American mixed-breed hound. It is the result of a breeding program started in 1969 by Donald B. MacMillan. The “Gran” in its name refers to its size, while the suffix “Mastin” means “faithful” or “loyal”. The “Borinquen” in its name refers to the Borinquén, the Taíno term for the island of Puerto Rico. The Gran Mastin is a loyal and loving companion and makes a good watchdog. It is a hardy, agile, and intelligent hunter, and packs a solid wallop when driven.

The Gran Mastin de Borinquen is a medium-large breed of dog originating in Puerto Rico. It was developed years ago by crossing other dogs with breeds like the Great Pyrenees. These dogs were originally used as a working breed, herding cattle and guarding property, however, they are also known for being excellent family pets. The Gran Mastin de Borinquen is a sturdy, muscular, large-boned, well-proportioned, active, powerful, agile, intelligent, and willful animal. They are equipped with a double coat of medium length that is rough and thick that protects them from extreme weather conditions. Their head is massive and triangular in shape. The muzzle is moderately long, with well developed teeth that are wide apart, and has a level bite. The nose is black in color. Their ears are erect and fairly large. They are set high on the head and hang close to the cheeks. The tail is customarily docked; it measures 2.5 to 4.5 inches in length. The eyes of the Gran Mastin are almond shaped and come in various shades of gold, amber, and dark brown. They possess great intelligence and drive. They are courageous, fearless, and loyal to the family. The temperament of the breed is best described as playful, loving, devoted, trustworthy, and protective.
