Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen History
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen (GBGV or GBGVP) is a medium to large-sized French scent hound. Although in the past it had been considered a variant of the Basset Fauve de Bretagne, it is now considered to be a separate breed. The ancestors of the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen can be traced back to the 14th century. The type known today originated in the 19th century, when a pack of hounds was created from the Vendeé and the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. These hounds, along with others from packs in other regions of France, were then crossed with English, Irish, and American hounds.
