The ancestors of the Grand Griffon Vendéene are believed to have arrived with the Celts, and were crossed with the Great Pyrenees. In 1955, the Grand Griffon Vendéene was recognized by the French Kennel Club. Since 1977, the breed has been recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, or FCI, the worldwide kennel club. The Grand Griffon Vendée is a medium-sized, muscular, well-proportioned, and agile working and guardian sheepdog.

The Great Wirehaired Griffon is a medium-sized, muscular, heavy-boned hound that typically stands between 22 and 27 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between 60 and 80 pounds. They have a long, lanky, rectangular-shaped body with a distinctive topknot of hair on top of their head. Their coat is coarse and wiry, very harsh, and comes in colors of red, blue, and brindle. They have a flat head with medium sized eyes and a pronounced underbite.
