Griffon Fauve de Bretagne History
The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne, also known as the Brittany Spaniel, is a breed of spaniel originating in France. The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne originated on the Isle of Ouessant, off the coast of Brittany, France. The working dogs on the island were a cross between a now-extinct local type of water-dog and the now-extinct English Black and Tan Terrier. These early griffons were thus a cross between spitz-type dogs and a terrier-type dog. The griffon was prized by fishermen because of its outstanding swimming abilities. These hounds would swim out after fish, then return to their masters at the dock. In 1952, the griffon was officially recognized by the French Kennel Club, becoming one of the first recognised French scenthound breeds.
