Hamiltonstovare History

The Hamiltonstovare is a fairly new American herding and draft horse that was created in the 1990s. The Hamilton is a variety of the sorrel horse. The Hamilton is a variety of the sorrel horse. The sorrel horses are one of the three main categories of chestnut horses. A sorrel is a reddish-brown color, with a “cape” of white hair on the neck. The sorrel coat gets its color from pigments called biliverdin and bilirubin. The sorrels are descendants of the (red) roan or buckskin and (white) gray horses and were developed as a distinct color by selection. The sorrels tend to have greater endurance than the roans, but less than the grays. The sorrels also differ from the roans in having a white or lightly colored nose, a finer head, and a narrower, more tapered muzzle. The sorrels also have shorter legs, a longer back, and a slightly longer tail than the roan. The sorrels are known for their intelligence, disposition, and versatility. They are generally docile, intelligent, and friendly. They are frequently used as show horses, in competitive trail riding, and as dressage and jumping mounts.
