Havana Silk History
The Havana Silk is a toy breed of hairless cat. The coat of the Havana Silk is silky, fine, and glossy. The body is round and has a well-developed chest. The tail is short, broad, and rounded at the tip. The legs are short and muscular. The eyes are almond-shaped. The Havana Silk originated as a mutation in the Siamese, and is descended from the Thai Longhair, Burmese, and British Shorthair. The gene responsible for the coat pattern was discovered by chance in 1967, by a breeder named Lillian Garrett. In 1967, a mutant kitten was born to Siamese mother, and the father was a Burmese. The kitten, named Sapphire, had very short fur on the body, but long, thick, and curly whiskers. The breeder called this trait “Havana”, after the capital city. Since then, the Havana silk has been a popular breed, and are particularly popular with cat breeders in South Florida.
