The Havanese is descended from the Bichon family, which includes such breeds as the Blanquito de la Habana and the Maltese. The Havanese was brought to the United States in the 1930s, where it was known as the Cuban Silk Dog. The Havanese first received championship status in 1945. The Havanese is a friendly and playful small dog, with a tail that is carried curled over the back. The tail is docked in some countries, but docking is not widely practiced in the US. The FCI recognized the Havanese in 1959. The AKC accepted the Havanese for registration in 1996. The Havanese is the seventh most popular purebred dog in the US.
