Irish Saint Terrier History

The Irish Saint is a terrier that was bred originally as a ratter. The male Irish Saint is named a “Jack,” while females are named “Jenny”. The Jack is the larger of the two sexes, weighing 15–26 lb (6.8–12.2 kg), while the Jenny weighs 10–18 lb (4.5–8.2 kg). Both Jacks and Jennys have a black head, white chest and feet, and either a red or tan body. The origins of the Irish Terrier are unclear. The first reported reference to the Irish Terrier was in the 1790 book The Natural History of Staffordshire, where it is described as a “rough-coated, small, active, amusing, faithful, and courageous terrier.” The “Irish” in its name is thought to be a later addition, and may have referred to Ireland’s association with it.
