Irish Wolfoodle History
The Irish Wolfhound is an extinct European breed of wolfhound that originated and developed in Ireland. It is believed to have been descended from the grey wolf but to have diverged from the gray wolf around 11,000 years ago. The origins of the Irish Wolfhound are uncertain, and it is not known when the strain which later evolved into the modern Irish Wolfhound first appeared. It is thought to have been an ancestor of the Irish Red and White Setter and the Irish Setter, and to have been domesticated by humans. It was used as a breeding animal by monks at monasteries, and may have even accompanied Saint Patrick to Ireland. The Irish Wolfhound was occasionally depicted in artwork from the 11th to 13th centuries, and by 1635 it was recognized by the English Kennel Club as the “Irish Lion Hound”.
