Istrian Shorthaired Hound History
The Istrian Shorthair (Istraživanjački rog) is a medium-sized hound originating from the Istrian Peninsula in northeastern Croatia. It is characterized by a short, dense coat, and a dog with a longer coat is considered a separate variety, the Istrian Longhair. The Istrian Shorthair, or Istra for short, is considered to be one of the oldest European hounds, with a known pedigree dating from 1760.

The Istrian Shorthaired Hound is a medium to large-sized breed of hunting hound that originated from the Istrian peninsula in Croatia. It is a primitive scenthound with a medium-length, rough-coated, wire-haired coat, characterized by stiff, upright hair. The head is moderately long and wedge-shaped, with erect ears. The body is compact, with well-developed muscles. The tail tapers slightly. The breed’s typical color is white, but dogs of other colors are occasionally found. They are active, courageous, and nimble, using all their senses while hunting. They communicate by barking or baying, making a distinctive sound, known as bleating.
