Karelian Bear Dog History
The Karelian Bear Dog is a Finnish spitz-type working and herding dog. The coat is short and dense, with a slightly coarser outer coat. The ears are long, narrow, and pendant. The origin of the modern Karelian Bear Dog is unknown, but several theories exist. One theory holds that the Karelian Bear Dogs are descended from the Saami people who crossed local sled dogs and mustelids. Another theory holds that they were introduced in the 14th century by monks, who brought with them a variety of Nordic dogs.

Karelian Bear Dog Activity Requirements
The Karelian Bear Dog has its origins in Lapland, where it was used to hunt and guard reindeer. It is an ancient breed that has survived for centuries. The Karelian Bear Dog is a large, powerful dog, and they require a great deal of exercise and socialization. This is not a dog that can be left in a kennel for long periods of time. They require an owner who is able to provide them with plenty of attention and affection. If you live in an apartment or don’t have a lot of space, this is probably not the breed of dog for you. A home with a large fenced yard is ideal.
