Dog Breed Profile

Labralas History

The Labradoodle, also known as the Goldendoodle, is a mixed-breed dog that originated in Australia in the 1990s. The Labradoodle is a cross-breed between the Labrador Retriever and the Standard or Miniature Australian Shepherd. The origin of the name “Labradoodle” is unclear, but it was first recorded in 1988. It is sometimes said that the term “Labrador” is a misnomer, because the individual dogs in the Labrador Retriever line were “Labs and golden”, but this is not the case. The term “Labrador” actually refers to the coat color, not the specific ancestry. All modern Labs are descended from the St. John’s Water Dog, which itself was the product of a mating between a Newfoundland and a now-extinct type of Canadian water spaniel. Since the early 1800s, the ancestors of today’s modern Labrador have been selectively bred to develop certain desirable traits, such as their mellow temperament, trainability, and eagerness to please. The coat colors of the modern black and white Labrador Retriever were developed by breeding the dogs with several different retriever and spaniel types, such as the black-and-tan Jindo, and the black-and-rust English Cocker Spaniel.
