Lha-Basset History
The Lha-Basset Hound is a hound type scenthound developed in France. The “Lh” in the name refers to Lautrec, a town in Haute-Vienne where the Basset Griffon Vendéens originated. Commonly nicknamed the “Basset Hound”, the LHA (as it is known in the canine world) is a medium- to large-sized, short-coated, long-legged dog. It has a square build with a broad head and muzzle, big wide-set eyes, and hanging ears. Its tail is docked. An athletic, agile and keen hunter, the LHA has retained its instinct to flush, point, and retrieve. However, it is less aggressive than other hounds, such as Foxhounds, and is often used as a “retriever only” or “amateur” hunt. The origin of the LHA dates to 1893, when Colonel George Malcolm, a Scottish breeder of Beagles and Foxhounds, imported a bitch from Belgium, who produced a litter of 12 puppies. The puppies were of mixed parentage, including Bassets, Deerhounds, Bloodhounds, Beagles, and Pointers. The Colonel mated his bitch with an English Pointer, and the resulting litter was the origin of the LBH.

Lha-Basset Activity Requirements
The Lha-Basset Hound is a unique, medium-sized hound that was developed in France. They are a popular hunting dog, but they make excellent companions as well. Lha-Bassets are not high maintenance when it comes to their exercise needs. While they don’t require a high amount of regular activity, they do need to play and run around from time to time. A 20 minute walk or a game of fetch are enough to keep most Basset’s happy and healthy. If you live in an apartment or don’t have a lot of space, a Lha-Basset might be the pet for you. They are fairly low energy and don’t require a lot of space. If you have an active lifestyle, a Basset’s happy-go-lucky attitude will be a good match.
