Maremma Sheepdog Temperament and Behaviour
The Maremma Sheepdog is a gentle, loving and devoted breed of dog. They are excellent with small children and get along well with other animals. They are highly intelligent, but can sometimes be stubborn. They are protective of their home and family, but due to their large size are not good for people who live in apartments.
Maremma Sheepdog Activity Requirements
Maremma Sheepdogs, or “Pastoral Dogs,” are an ancient Italian herding dog that is gaining popularity in the United States. With a solid build and a powerful gait, the Maremma is a high-energy, strong-willed, and intelligent breed of dog. They are happiest when given a job to do, whether that be herding, guarding, or hiking. While they do require regular exercise, they are not a “busy” type of breed. They will be happy with a 30- to 60-minute walk or jog each day. They may also be a good candidate for agility or fly-ball. With high energy levels, the Maremma is not the ideal choice for people who are away from home for long periods of time. They are not well-suited to apartment living, as they will become bored and destructive if left alone for long periods.
