Mastino Napoletano History
The Mastino Napoletano is a Molosser type Italian herding and guarding dog. The Mastino Napoletano was recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 2015. The origin of the mastino di mazza is unknown, but several theories exist, including that the ancient Molossuses crossed with Turkish dogs. Italy was the cradle of Molosser-type breeds, such as various ancient Molossian types, the Leonberger, the Neapolitan Mastiff, the Italian Spinone, the Cane Corso, the Alpini and the Pyrenean Mastiff. The mastino napoletano was used for both protection and cattle raising, but nowadays it is principally a guard and for bullfighting. The FCI considers the mastino di mazza as a separate breed from the Neapolitan Mastiff.
