Mini Cairn Pin History
The Mini Cairn Terrier is a toy terrier that was developed in Scotland near the end of the 19th century. The Scottish Black and Tan Miniature was the name given to the early ancestors of the modern day Mini Cairn. In 1891, the Kennel Club of England recognized the “Scottish Black and Tan” as a distinct variety of the Skye Terrier, and as such, the breeders referred to them as “Black and Tan” or “B&T” for short. The B&T was one of the smallest of the 13 recognized varieties of the Skye Terrier and the B&T was also unique in that the dogs showed various shades of black and tan. The darker the coat, the more dominant the breeding lines. The B&Ts coat color ranges from “red” to “smoke” with black, red, and chestnut. The B&T was recognized by the AKC as a distinct variety in 1934.
