The Newfie is a purebred working-type Newfoundland, and is one of the more popular varieties of the Newfoundland. The origin of the word “Newf” is unknown, but Newfie is generally accepted to be an abbreviation of Newfoundland.

The Newf is a medium size, short coated breed of dogs originally bred for hunting. The breed is a descendant of Newfoundland, and Labrador, and may be the oldest type of retriever. Their size makes them excellent for water and land work, and they have the stamina and temperament function well as a working dog. They are able to retrieve small to large game from water. They are easily trained and are very adaptable. Their fur is short and thick, and they are resistant to cold weather. Their eyes are usually a color of blue or green.
